Day 69. After a three week break the guys were right back on the job. The brickies were on site working at a rate of knots as was the chippy inside doing all the door and window surrounds.
The chap who is coming to lay the floor has been out to the house. He identified there is definitely a slight height difference between the concrete floor and the wooden floor. This not only impacts what we are trying to achieve in the kitchen but also will affect the bamboo flooring and the study floor as this join between the two floors goes across the whole house. He and the site manager are speaking about it so it can be rectified and the floor will sit flat. He also identified that the kitchen bench alignment is not quite right and that if the floor was put in as it is at the moment the join between the bamboo and the vinyl would not be square to the rest of the room.
Day 71. We took the tiles we were supplying around to the house this morning. The tilers turned up about an hour after us and I went through the tiling pattern with them. My key thing was I wanted the stripes on the tiles in a particular direction. Of interest during conversation it came out that the normal way to lay tiles in showers is on the angle but I wanted our laid square as having a stripe it would look odd with the floor ones straight and the shower ones angled. The tilers said they were able to do this fine. We also discussed the feature tile in the kids bathroom as it will go at about door height. The tilers indicated that they would put the feature immediately on top of the 5th tile but indicated it might not work out to be perfectly flush with the top of the door but I have not problems with this provided the feature is the same height around the whole room.
The other interesting thing, which is not a big issue but I did not realise is that the standard height for the tiles around the floor in the wet areas is 15cm. So if you have a tile that is bigger than this they actually cut the tile down. This will only occur in our toilets as both the bathroom and ensuite tiles are floor to ceiling.
Tip - Confirm the direction all your tiles will be laid especially if you have a particular preference.
Day 72. The
rest of the tiles have been delivered which will make the tilers happy
as they were wondering when they were coming. The floor in the kids
bathroom is all laid as is half the powder room. I am really pleased with the match shown below of the ensuite tiles to the ensuite vanity.
All the doors inside the house are now hung and the finish framing around the windows and doors is finished.
The tilers have prepped all the floor in the ensuite with mortar. Its interesting part of their solution to the laying the tiles square issue was to actually have square drainholes rather than round ones which I am really happy with. They have started doing the walls in the kids bathroom too.
What a huge house! It’s good that you have the building progress documented. Glass and bricks, I think that’s a risky move to achieve a beautiful house, but you nailed it! Great job!
